The brief for this small London garden was very simple - create a modern outdoor space that could be used for both relaxing and entertaining, with enough planting space to bring a little bit of the country into the city.
With this in mind, the design focused on splitting the space into two separate areas. A decked area immediately outside the back door, provided space for a dining table and chairs to sit six people and a movable barbecue. A paved area surrounded by raised planters and a built in timber seat creates an area for lounging and relaxing; just far enough away from the house to not get disturbed by knocks on the door and the ringing phone.
The inclusion of a planting bed at ground level separates the two areas and softens the hardscape elements of the garden, whilst also providing a great view through the back door from the kitchen.
