Terraced Country Garden - Cotswolds, UK

This large plot of land was purchased by the previous owner of the house to build a tennis court, but the remainder of the land was left as rough grassland and a very unusable steep slope. With a beautiful view from the top of the slope, my client was keen to take advantage of this and turn the land into a more beautiful and usable area.

The simple design consists of two large retaining walls that create two level terraces in the slope. On the top terrace, a curved paved area covered with a pergola creates a seating area where the views over the Cotswold countryside can be appreciated. Between this and the tennis court, a 'Boules' gravel playing field was created and the grassed area at the bottom became a perfectly level croquet lawn.

To blend effortlessly with the surrounding area, the walls were dry laid using a local sandstone.
